African American Speaker Questioning A World

That Tears Down Trees

I love the great outdoors.  And I love the city too.  Most people who know me, know that I am found of being outside, around nature, trees, etc.  While running in the park recently, it hit me that many of our problems stem from our profound disdain and reverence for nature and the power She has to keep us sane and secure. Without trees, we would be a world with no shade, intense heat, and lots more carbon in the air, e.g. pollution.
I also like old houses.  I like the new, but old houses seem to have a characteristic that can’t be found or faked in newer buildings.  The trend today is to take a house that could otherwise be fixed and deem it a “tear down.”  So much of our urban areas areas around the country are falling victim to this.  In areas of Atlanta, I recently saw firsthand how neighborhoods are being totally gentrified and rebuilt, to look like something…well…something fake and plastic.
Walking neighborhoods are disappearing for cosmopolitan lifestyles and I wonder if anyone else cares.
What do you think?

yeah, i’m from chicago and its definitely something i see day to day. people not taking pride in their surroundings and the reason they do not is because they do not respect the aesthetic and useful value of nature. i wish there were more agricultural projects like when i was a kid to make children fall in love with nature and treat it well when we are adults. guess thats my two cents:-)
